Great-gulfed; vast in hollows

Meaning

Ocean is μεγακήτης at LI.1, where the nymphs are called his daughters. “Great-gulfed” fits the magnitude and recesses of the sea, although the lexical formation also admits monster-associated interpretation. The apparatus attributes μεγακήτεος to Wiel and reports μεγαλήτορος, a different epithet; neither the adopted compound nor that alternative should become a confident etymological account.
