To beseech; to entreat

Meaning

λίτομαί commonly introduces a direct request to a god or goddess, often after ἀλλά turns praise into petition. Its complements vary: Aither is asked to be tempered, Fortune to come kindly, Sleep to arrive sweetly, and Dream to disclose divine messages. The plural λιτόμεσθα at LXXXII.6 makes the address collective. This attested verbal formation is kept distinct from λίσσομαι, though both belong to the language of supplication.
