- Frost-congealing; frost-bound
Meaning
Boreas is invoked from snowy Thrace at LXXX.2. The compound can make the north wind an agent that congeals things with frost, the interpretation preferred by the lexical evidence, or describe him as himself frost-bound, as the supplied English does. Both belong to the cold imagery, but they distribute the action differently. The printed vocative κρυμοπαγές is reported as Abel’s adjustment of κρυμοπαγής; that inflectional difference does not resolve the active or passive sense.
