English renderings
adversity; baseness or cowardice

Meaning

Nomos brings heavy κακότης to the lawless at LXIV.11: the noun there is the harm or adversity they suffer under his rule. In appended Ares LXXXVIII.12 the speaker wishes bitter κακότης driven from his head, in a prayer for courage and self-restraint. Baseness, weakness, or cowardice fits that personal context better. A uniform “evil” would conceal the change from adverse consequence to a quality the speaker wants to overcome.
