English renderings
broad; far-extending

Meaning

The adjective marks the extent of earth, heaven, and Tartarus. In LVIII.7, wide Tartarus contains beings over whom Eros holds sway; in LXXXV.2, wide earth nourishes the creatures reached by Sleep. Breadth helps express an inclusive domain, but it is not a numerical measurement or a single map of the cosmos.
