English renderings
provoke, stir up

Meaning

The speaker asks to restrain the sharp force, μένος, of the spirit, θυμός, that provokes him toward battle (LXXXVIII.14–15). The masculine relative ὅς refers to θυμός, not to neuter μένος. The desired courage includes control of that spirit’s force rather than surrender to every martial impulse.
