English renderings
lasting; enduring; eternal

Meaning

The adjective gives duration to Hephaistos (LXVI.3), the Sun’s all-seeing eye (VIII.1), and the long sleep brought by Death (LXXXVII.5). Persistent divine activity and the lasting cessation of mortal activity are deliberately different contexts. “Eternal” may fit the elevation of the language, but it should not flatten those contrasts into one definition of eternity.
