English renderings
radiance; glare

Meaning

The thunderbolt flashes exalted radiance at XIX.2; the Eumenides possess a dreadful, flesh-destroying gleam at LXX.7. Brightness is powerful in both, but not automatically comforting or beneficial. “Glare” can make the threatening force of the second context clearer than an invariably serene “light.”
