These concrete workshop words distinguish containers, working surfaces and removed products. A bladder figures in the saltpetre-water account; marble supports the dissolution of sal ammoniac and later grinding or resolution. A crucible contains metal plates during heating, while scales are the surface material removed after quenching in the burnt-copper passage. Their roles differ even when they occur in the same preparation narrative: apparatus is not the product collected from it.
