The underlying bearer of a condition, not a grammatical subject or a topic of conversation. Body is called the subject of death, while spirit is the subject of life. This parallel assigns mortality and vitality to distinct bearers within a natural thing. The edition explicitly explains this historical philosophical sense in note 32.
