Meaning

Steel is paired with iron in the explanation of metallic dryness and in the preparation of crocus. Book IV claims that the pair have the least Sulphur and fatness among metals. Book V’s use of steel plates shows that chalybs is not an ornamental synonym inserted once: it identifies a particular starting material in the account of metallic mortification.
