The restoration of wood is called possible to nature but impossible without exceptional skill and diligence. Book V likewise credits an expert alchemist’s industry with transforming crude substances. These words make human competence a condition of the asserted results, not a replacement for natural limits. They also qualify the author’s promises: the account does not present every transformation as easy or automatically successful.
