Meaning

Purification and renewal describe the claimed outcome of repeated Mercury transformations and the restored condition of wood. In the Mercury passage the language culminates in removal of all impurity, blackness and poisonousness. That universal scope must remain attributed to the source; note 60 refuses to turn it into a safety conclusion. Renewal elsewhere can mean recovered form and enhanced virtue rather than simple cleaning.
