Meaning

Duplex introduces two kinds of generation: one occurs naturally without art, the other through art, specified as alchemy. Una and altera mark the coordinated branches. The next sentence adds a general formulation in which all things could be described as generated naturally from earth with putrefaction’s assistance. Thus the division is useful but immediately qualified; it is not a simple permanent opposition between nature and everything artificial.
