The soldier’s tessera or simbolum distinguishes him from an enemy and indicates political or national affiliation through colour. The mark belongs to rank and office, a category the author deliberately limits before turning to natural signs. It is evidence by convention and use, not a bodily essence; that difference matters when the book later extends its sign-language to nature.
