Meaning

Living Mercury is called an open metal because it is said to contain all colours and hiddenly all metals. The paragraph distinguishes what it brings forth in fire from what it does not yield outside fire. Apertum therefore belongs to an account of latent capacity and manifestation, not simply an unsealed container. The metaphor helps explain Mercury’s maternal title without independently proving the contained metals or a modern transmutation process.
