Meaning

Manners and gestures can be altered at any moment, the author argues, and can therefore deceive a reader of signs. A soldier could stage the appearance of courage to secure higher pay. This criticism limits behavioural signs within the text’s system, but its proposed preference for supposedly fixed bodily features does not make physiognomic character judgement reliable.
