Lions allegedly born dead are awakened by their parents’ dreadful cry. The sound is made the cause of acquired life, and the author distinguishes the case from ordinary sleep. Note 59 identifies the inherited natural-history legend. The story’s role is argumentative analogy for restoration; it is not a biological rule verified by the edition or a procedure for animal care.
