The general answer to what life is: an invisible and intangible spiritual essence. The phrase is immediately expanded through spirit and spiritual thing, rather than opposed to them as a separate ingredient. Its role is explanatory: it makes room for life in all corporeal things, including materials without animal motion. It does not mean that bodily differences cease to matter.
