These verbs describe distinct arrangements of metal before further treatment: layering it with another material and making it into granules. Book V uses them while insisting that calcination has several modes. The distinction concerns form and contact, not merely two decorative expressions for preparation. Neither verb names the final arcanum; each belongs to the process by which a material is put into a suitable condition.
