Attached labels distinguish the many substances in apothecaries’ shops and laboratories. The practical problem is memory and selection: similar containers can hold different waters, oils, powders, and simple ingredients. These ordinary written signs do not depend on visible resemblance between the label and the substance. They establish a conventional baseline before the text develops claims about naturally revealing names.
