Meaning

The opening definition describes life as invisible and intangible, qualities that distinguish its spiritual character from ordinary sensory apprehension of a body. Hidden does not mean ineffective: the spirit is said to contain the thing’s virtue and power. Later the earth’s element is called invisible hidden life, even while earth in itself is called dead.
