Meaning

These named materials supply comparisons of hardness or appearance rather than automatically ingredients. Cinnabar is said to adhere hard like hematite, while sublimed Mercury becomes hard like crystal and white like snow. The similes give sensory descriptions of preparations. They do not assert that the products have turned into the compared stones or acquired an identical chemical constitution.
