The alchemist is said to make the unfruitful fruitful and the immature mature. The paired contrasts are related but distinct: one concerns bearing a result, the other completing or ripening an existing condition. The passage goes on to speak of growth and increase as well. Its accumulation of verbs enlarges the promised scope of art rather than defining all successful transformation as one identical event.
