The dedication repeatedly joins intimate friend with dearest brother. This language frames instruction as a response to personal loyalty and affection, not as an impersonal public textbook. Frater does not by itself establish biological brotherhood: the address and later references to the recipient’s family support a rhetoric of brotherly friendship. The modern note likewise does not treat the transmitted intimacy as independent biographical verification.
