Meaning

The phrase denotes a historically graded heat condition. It appears in artificial incubation and in later transformation descriptions, with the third degree specified in some processes. The text does not provide a modern temperature scale here. Gradus also means a stage in the conceptual description of putrefaction, so the object of the genitive matters: a degree of fire is not automatically the same sort of stage as a beginning of generation.
