Meaning

The end of the day’s work is the first image in Book V’s definition of human death. It gives death the shape of a completed activity before the passage names withdrawal of air, disappearance of balsam and separation of substances. The metaphor is not a literal assertion that death occurs at night, nor a replacement for the physiological and theological images that follow.
