The coagulation item in Book Eight says that dampness is separated from the moist, followed by water from earth. The edition preserves this unusual wording instead of supplying a conjectural distinction such as solvent and solute. A smooth modern paraphrase could falsely imply that the source’s material categories are clearer than they are; the compact phrase instead preserves the difficulty of this particular distinction.
