Meaning

Lemma.

Mercury says he was young for as long as he was alone and is now older while remaining the same. The alchemist welcomes age because he assumes it means maturity and fixity. Mercury replies that visiting him in age is useless without knowing his youth. The temporal vocabulary makes origin and development conditions of understanding, not a simple instruction to obtain an older specimen.
