English renderings
with vinegar and salt

Meaning

Phrase.

The alchemist cites vinegar and salt as proof that he knows how to purify Mercury. The old man immediately rejects this as the true purification at issue. These materials therefore enter as components of the character’s boast, not an endorsed prescription. Their role differs from Salt as one of the three first principles in the friend’s programme, even though the vocabulary overlaps.
