The second function in the threefold division is congealing mercury. The chapter then argues that mercury is coagulated only by sulphur and assigns sulphur the male role in the work. Later kingdom distinctions qualify the relation: each sulphur acts on its own mercury, not an unrelated one. The term does not establish that ordinary sulphur added to ordinary mercury produces gold.
