Sponge

Meaning

Lemma.

Earth’s porosity is compared to a sponge. The point of the image is receptive capacity: earth receives, preserves and manifests what the other elements deposit, rather than producing from itself. The simile accompanies the stronger designation of earth as nurse and womb. It helps distinguish the material recipient from the active powers that mature, separate and raise what it contains.
