- remote matter
Meaning
Form.
Remote matter of metals is the four elements. The author argues that beginning there wastes effort, since nature has already generated the principles from which the artist can work. The three-miles-versus-four analogy expresses this distance. The argument does not deny the elements’ explanatory importance; the whole treatise investigates their origin precisely to explain the more proximate materials.
