Rational soul

Meaning

Phrase.

The rational soul contains powers of reason and understanding and is derived, in the author’s account, from the purest elemental fire. It is divinely infused into vital spirit and distinguishes humanity from other animals. The later inability of philosophers to infuse soul places a firm limit on art. This theological psychology must be distinguished from ordinary vital spirit and from metallic soul-language.
