Meaning

Phrase.

The three comparative grades distinguish portions of water. The purest supplies the heavens, the purer dissolves into air, and the simple gross portion remains in its sphere. This is a qualitative ordering used in the creation narrative. It is not a set of analytical concentrations, and the paradoxical description of the merely pure as gross depends upon its comparison with still purer grades.
