English renderings
philosophers’ salt of stone

Meaning

Phrase.

The salt is said to be extracted from the water of our dew and to nourish the growth of all things. The surrounding passage then identifies the magnet with the earlier chalybs and associates alkali, armoniac and vegetable salt. Those links belong to the author’s explanation, but the qualified philosophers’ must remain visible: an ordinary modern salt name is not established by this phrase alone.
