mercury’s coagulant

Meaning

Phrase.

Sulphur is named the coagulant of mercury in the conclusion. Its preparation is difficult and its discovery still more difficult; the whole secret is said to lie in philosophical sulphur within mercury’s innermost parts. The nearby kingdom argument restricts this to each mercury’s own sulphur, not a foreign one. The phrase records a functional relation rather than identifying a modern catalyst.
