- kidney stone
Meaning
Phrase.
The narrator says that in seeking the philosophers’ stone the failed alchemist acquired a kidney stone. The pun punctures pretensions to universal medicine and marks the bodily cost of misguided pursuit. It is not a clinical diagnosis of a real identifiable patient or an assertion that a specific chemical procedure causes renal stones. The satire then targets ungrounded practitioners who become physicians or soap-makers.
