house of gold

Meaning

Phrase.

Mercury is called gold’s house, and water mercury’s house, in the concluding argument about nearness of materials. The image orders degrees of relation: the difference between gold and mercury is least, that between water and mercury greater, and that between gold and water greater still. It does not erase their differences or identify ordinary water directly with gold.
