heart of the sea

Meaning

Phrase.

The sea’s heart or centre is the origin and return-point of terrestrial waters in the author’s model. Some unnamed opponents are reported to say waters are consumed there and regenerated by stars; the author rejects this. The phrase therefore anchors a circulating system, not a place where water vanishes. Its bodily metaphor is consistent with his larger cosmic anatomy.
