- fountain
Meaning
Lemma.
Asked whether he is Count Bernard’s fountain, Mercury denies being the fountain and says he is water surrounded by it. The distinction is explicit: container or surrounding source is not equated with its water. The alchemist’s next question about dissolving gold does not receive a simple confirmation. The passage should be read as a correction of identification, not as an unqualified answer that Mercury is the famous fountain.
