Meaning
Form.
French invites the candid reader to mend errors caused by his pen or the printer. The historical spelling and apostrophe are retained in the appendix, while the modernisation uses ordinary modern wording. The invitation concerns textual correction in service of a better rendering; it does not erase the distinction between what the witness prints, what a translator intended and what a later editor proposes.
