conjuring syllables

Meaning

Phrase.

These syllables are fragments of the alchemist’s attempted charm. The first performance includes further syllables and the source itself abbreviates it with etc.; a later repetition again meets Mercury’s laughter. Their evidential value is dramatic: the worker persists in an unsuccessful technique rather than reconsidering its foundation. The edition does not expand the fragment into a complete ritual or imply efficacy.
