By digestion alone

Meaning

Phrase.

After Nature condemns harsh and inappropriate treatment, the alchemist proposes to work gently by digestion alone. Nature answers that this is good if he knows how, otherwise he will injure himself and his finances. The qualification prevents gentleness from becoming sufficient knowledge. Digestion names a proposed mode of treatment whose validity still depends on understanding the subject, conditions and desired outcome.
