Meaning
Phrase.
Mercury limits his obedience by this phrase. It qualifies the alchemist’s expectation that a material can simply be commanded to disclose and perform everything necessary for the stone. Read beside the later inventory of prepared forms, the phrase distinguishes what the material can undergo from the knowledge required to achieve the desired work. It prevents obedience from becoming an unconditional guarantee.
