- a bird’s wings
Meaning
Phrase.
The visible Latin phrase is irregular in the final riddle, and the edition understands it as alae avis while preserving ales avis in the source layer. The English therefore renders wings in the statement that Mercury is an animal yet has a bird’s wings. This is a disclosed local interpretation of the printed wording, not evidence that the regularised Latin form was itself printed here.
