Meaning

Living Mercury is the most limpidly purified catholic first matter, also named Azoth and the pri-material fountain. In the central passage “living” appears together with “ensouled” and “catholic,” so it marks a qualified natural power rather than visible motion alone.

Use in the book

At p. 97 this description opens the universal way. The purified matter is taken by itself, without silvern or golden addition, and the continuation describes its regeneration and more-than-perfecting. Living Mercury at this point is ready for that further work, not a declaration that the final Stone has already been attained.

The title should therefore be distinguished from the running Mercuries prepared out of metallic bodies. Those may flow in quicksilver form and receive elaborate treatment without becoming pri-material. Their movement cannot substitute for the catholic animation of the required subject.

The argument also preserves continuity. At p. 98 the achieved Azoth is still ensouled catholic Mercury, now regenerated of itself and more-than-perfected. Life is not lost when preparation progresses, but the repeated noun does not erase the changed condition.

Places to read

  1. 1599 p. 69Corporeal running Mercuries provide a contrasting kind of mobility.
  2. 1599 p. 97Purified first matter is explicitly ensouled, catholic and living Mercury.
  3. 1599 p. 98Further regeneration yields more-than-perfected ensouled catholic Mercury.

Translation in this edition

“Living” renders Viuus; the surrounding terms are essential to its local sense. Treating it simply as a synonym of liquid quicksilver would collapse the distinction on which the passage depends.
