Meaning
The lime-twig figure associates certain opponents with trapping birds. The p. 22 marginal Ardelio is lime-twig-like; a disputant in the apple argument is similarly mocked on p. 122; and the credulous crowd on pp. 170–1712 can be caught by any such catcher.
Use in the book
The image changes roles within the controversy. A boastful critic may be figured as a trapper, while the eager would-be gold-maker becomes the bird that cannot resist. What connects the instances is inadequate reflection: sticky assertions seize attention before their natural grounds have been examined.
The metaphor is especially apt to the wandering projector of p. 170, whose cries empty others' purses. Yet the text does not describe an actual trap laid at a specific site or establish a named operator's identity. The fowling vocabulary is a way of depicting intellectual and financial susceptibility.

Translation in this edition
The supplied apparatus explains Leimstange as a limed rod used for birds. Retain a concrete bird-catching rendering rather than reducing every occurrence to the generic “swindler.”

The varying printed compounds should be indexed as witnessed forms. Their shared image does not demonstrate that every occurrence attacks the same individual.
