Lemma.
Déiste identifies belief in God without necessarily adherence to a particular revealed religion. The narrator gives it as one element of Gamelin’s character, beside gravity, virtue and good citizenship. In the immediate sentence he can accept union before law or God alone but only in public. Deist should not be translated as atheist, nor does the label prove his agreement with every philosophical position later attributed to another believer. The local issue is how principle governs an intimate arrangement.
