Meaning

The guarded flame represents the continuity of wisdom; a lamp represents a bearer or local expression of its light. A living teaching can illuminate others without being exhausted by being shared.

Use in the book

The original introduction places a few initiates in each generation around the sacred flame. Their lamps rekindle the lesser lamps of the outside world when the light grows dim. The following verse asks that the flame not die in its cavern or temple.

I returns to faithful custodians who keep that flame alive while transmitting doctrine from master to student. The images give warmth and visible continuity to a history whose chain of transmission is otherwise unnamed. They also connect secrecy with preservation rather than mere refusal.

Flame and lamp are preserved as images. The occurrence list for light is lexical and does not classify every use as a symbol of initiation.

Reading the argument

The literary image is evidence of how the book wants its teaching understood. It is not independent evidence for an unbroken ancient lineage. Light elsewhere can mean knowledge, physical illumination, or one pole of a contrast; the concordance deliberately records those other occurrences too.
